Visit to LignoSilva: Exploring forest innovation in Slovakia
During the Erasmus+ mobility week in Banská Bystrica 2026 the students had the opportunity to visit LignoSilva, a Centre of Excellence in Slovakia that is leading the way in sustainable forestry and wood innovation. This visit was an eye-opening experience, showing us how research, technology, and nature can work together to create a greener future. LignoSilva is not just a research centre—it is a hub for innovation in the forestbased industry. Its main goal is to integrate research, development, and sustainable practices across the entire wood value chain, from forest management to wood processing and recycling.
The centre focuses on four key areas:
- Sustainable forest management, including climate-adapted forest protection and modern technologies like 3D scanning to optimize wood quality.
- Advanced wood recycling and chemical processing, such as developing biodegradable packaging and special papers.
- Laboratory testing to support new ideas and innovations.
- Digital transformation to improve efficiency and sustainability in the industry.
What makes LignoSilva special is its commitment to a circular bioeconomy. Instead of relying on fossil fuels, the centre promotes the use of renewable wood biomass to create eco-friendly products. This approach helps reduce carbon emissions and supports the EU’s Green Deal, making it a model for sustainable development in Europe.
Exploring the greenhouse and the experimental field
One of the highlights of our visit was touring LignoSilva’s greenhouse and experimental field. In the greenhouse, we saw how researchers are growing and studying plants under controlled conditions to understand their resilience to climate change. The experimental field was equally impressive, as it demonstrated innovative forestry techniques aimed at improving wood production while protecting the environment.
We learned about integrated pest management systems, which help forests adapt to changing climates, and energy-efficient technologies for processing wood. The centre’s work in these areas is not only scientifically advanced but also practical, offering real solutions for the challenges faced by mountain regions.
Why LignoSilva matters for our project
Our Erasmus+ project focuses on climate change in mountain areas, and LignoSilva provided a perfect example of how science and industry can collaborate to address this global issue. By promoting sustainable forestry practices, the centre helps protect mountain ecosystems while supporting local economies. The visit also showed us the importance of international cooperation. LignoSilva works with partners across Europe, including the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and the Pulp and Paper Research Institute in Bratislava, to share knowledge and develop new technologies. This collaboration ensures that the solutions created here can benefit not just Slovakia, but all of Europe.
